When times have proven that a change needs to come, generations before rely on the

youth to make those changes. Young people have been said to be the voice of the future and one

of the most influential ways to amplify those voices is to vote. With voting polls opening in

November, Texas Southern University's women empowerment organization, HERtxsu, teamed

up with Non-profit organization emphasizing ballot education for young black voters, Engaged

Voters, in teaching the importance of voting and what to expect on the day of.

HERtxsu is a women empowerment organization aimed at helping women and the

community become better through mentorship, sisterhood, and philanthropy. With the hopes of

educating women on the importance of voting before this upcoming election, an event was

created on October 3rd along with Engaged Voters to bring that knowledge.

“ As a women empowerment organization, I think that it’s important for us to get involved in our

communities, making sure these women are engaged in this election and making sure they are

aware of what is going on,” said Lauryn Bracken, president of HERtxsu.

One of the leading reasons why people don’t vote is because of a lack of information.

According to Tanisha Manning, founder, and CEO of Engaged Voters, people choose not to vote

because they do not know what to expect, or because they are afraid of the extent of the ballot.

The organization’s goal is to bring ballot education to those who are unaware.

“ I hope the students gain knowledge, and confidence before they get to the polls at the end of

this event,” added Manning.

The voices of the youth can be heard in politics, it starts with voter knowledge,

conversation, and initiative. These organizations have shared the importance of remaining

knowledgeable on the parts of society that make up democracy. By teaming up with Engaged

Voters, HERtxsu helped aid in that awareness. Our voices matter, amplify them and vote!
