Mister and Miss Texas Southern University Coronation Inspire Again!
Written by: Jayhlinmichel
Homecoming week always has a way of exposing students to it all. From showing
students how things used to be celebrated by older alumni to the power of representation. When
it comes to celebration whether it be crazy parties, music, food, or large-scale tailgates, it is no
secret that the TSU tigers know how to have a good time.
One thing that remains consistent whether it be in the heat of homecoming or the stress of
exam week is letting students know their voice matters. A way that TSU honored this idea during
the week of homecoming was through this year's Mr. and Miss. Texas Southern University
Coronation.
“ We need to support everyone on campus. Just being able to see different perspectives,
not just at a football game, but to see a different perspective on campus life. I feel like that’s
important,” added a coronation attendee.
With the theme of this year’s coronation being ‘The Great Gatsby,’ the formal event not
only offered students the opportunity to get to know those representing our school, but it allowed
them to have fun expressing themselves through fashion.
“ I’m honestly excited to see everyone’s dresses and formal wear, I think it will be very
different hopefully with the theme of the 1920’s,” said Mr. TSU cheer.
Throughout the night, those who represented different departments in our school shared
personal speeches, and the winners of Mr. and Miss TSU also stirred emotions with their stories
and words of gratitude.
“ I actually got emotional because I don’t have my parents either and I was just putting
myself in Mr. TSU’s shoes. He doesn’t have his parents, and I could see where he was coming
from and why he was so emotional, “ added a performer from the night.
As we enter the last few weeks of the semester and scramble around busy schedules, last-
minute studying, and registering for classes, may we keep in mind the values that the coronation
shared. The night expressed the importance of our voice. According to students, it inspired them
and showed what hard work can do.
Congratulations to this year’s Mr. and Miss TSU and until next time, keep your voices
heard Tigers!
Peace.
