TSU "You Matter Movement" Texas Southern Hosts a Suicide Prevention Walk

Suicide is the second leading cause of death of college students. Although college is one of the best things

that you could ever experience, mental health is one of the hardest parts. Texas Southern University

recognizes this and starts a movement. “I matter, You matter, All tigers matter” chants the voices of the

participants of TSU’s suicide walk.

The walk was hosted by many organizations such as Student Government Association External

Affairs Committee, Brothers United, HERTSU and many more but the guy to keep your eyes on is

External Affairs Vice President Zy Haynes. His objective was to uplift, educate and guide. He was

influenced by the 74th Mrs. Texas Southern University when she hosted a “I Choose Life

Movement '' last year. “I just wanted to continue on that legacy for suicide awareness”, Zy did an

exceptional job of keeping the ball rolling. The message was clear throughout the entire walk,

“You Matter.”

“We just wanted to come out and shed light about suicide awareness” This was the education

aspect of the movement. The walk informed people that suicide is actually a problem and it

impacts lots of people’s lives. One of the participants Anisa, a senior lost her brother to suicide

says “Self isolation, doing things they normally wouldn’t do, basically different behaviors and

closed off people who weren’t normally closed off” are warning signs of depression and suicide.

“Constantly checking up on people” would be ways to prevent suicide. She also says “Constantly

reaching out” can help prevent suicide.

Texas Southern’s suicide walk was something everyone needed even if you didn’t think you did.

All organizations and participants were gratefully appreciated. Always keep in touch with your

loved one and show them they’re loved.
